If you’ve had a dental extraction or already have a missing tooth, a bridge might be right for you. We can use a dental bridge to replace lost teeth, help maintain your facial shape, and relieve biting tension. If you’re missing teeth, your jawbone can degrade, and some of your facial muscles can weaken. This can cause a “saggy” look on your face. A bridge helps support the teeth next to a gap and prevents tooth loosening and weakening of facial muscles, improving your appearance.
A bridge is a prosthetic tooth set filling the gap left by a lost tooth. A bridge is a terrific solution to cover that space with a prosthetic that looks, feels, and performs much like a natural tooth. Your bridge is connected to neighboring teeth for support and can be composed of gold, alloys, porcelain, or a combination of these materials.
A basic bridge consists of three prosthetic teeth: two crowns or veneers covering the natural teeth on either side of the gap and one central tooth replacing the missing tooth in the middle.
We prepare those supporting teeth on either side of the gap to allow the bridge to fit over them, similar to placing a crown. Then, we cement the bridge in place.
Bridges have a few minor drawbacks, such as the possibility of them coming loose. They are, however, built and set in such a way that they are durable and long-lasting. Just let us know if your bridge becomes loose or needs repair, and we’ll take care of it promptly and comfortably.
Bridges are also more challenging to clean than natural teeth. Because a bridge comprises three artificial teeth in a row, there is no natural space between them. You won’t be able to floss between them. Cleaning around, between, and underneath a bridge can also be challenging. This is due to the risk of buildup between the bridge material and the underlying natural teeth.
Another downside of a bridge is that the natural teeth that support it usually must be prepared and modified, even if in good form. However, bridges are a quick, effective, relatively simple dental solution. A bridge can be placed in as little as a few hours, although the entire process may require several appointments to give your teeth and mouth time to recuperate after each treatment.
With the proper care, a dental bridge can last a lifetime. Just practice good dental hygiene habits as usual, and take care when biting and chewing hard foods.
